性別革命是指在二十世紀時所發生的婦女解放運動、女性─性別意識和婦女與性別研究等三合一的社會現象。就性別研究而言，由婦女解放運動挑戰（和批判）父權體制所催生的婦女研究不僅徹底的改變了人們對於女性的看法，同時也連帶地激勵了學術界對於「男性」的全面（深入）理解企圖。嚴格說來，引領世界學術風潮的美國也僅有不到四分之一個世紀的「男性研究」歷史。而兩岸三地的學界也只有在近十年來才有零星的相關討論。儘管如此，由於女性主義對父權社會的強烈批判，性別（包括男性）研究在這短暫的時間中，也引發了極為熾熱的討論。特別在新舊世紀（千年）交替的此刻，整理並記錄男性研究發端的歷史，並前瞻它的未來走向，是個極具意義且能豐富性別研究的重要舉措。本研究以文獻收集和內容分析的方式歸類並討論部分中英文有關「男性研究」的（20 年間）現況。首先我們簡要鋪陳婦運、女性主義、婦女研究以及它們催生男性研究的背景；接著介紹男性氣概的建構與男性經驗的關係、男性女性主義、做女人的事、性取向少數與性別平等、以及男性研究／運動的意義和內涵等五個領域。接著我提出四個男性（和性別）研究中的重要難（無）解議題，並提出我對這四個議題的看法。這四個議題分別是：本質論和建構論的爭議、性別─性屬─性偏好的錯綜關係、性別與其他分類方式（如種族、階級、和世代等）的優先順位性，和性別（男性）研究做為一個學科／門的矛盾性。最後的結論，則是整理和重申男性研究在新世紀的發展潛力。

Men’s Studies in A New Millennium

Abstract ｜
This article describes the history and development of men’s studies.
A subdiscipline of gender studies, men’s studies was inspired by the
women’s movement, as well as academic programs in women’s studies
and feminist theory. Over the past two decades, however, men’s studies
has become the most critical and fruitful wing of its parent discipline.
In mapping the‘ study of masculinities’, this article identifies four areas
of inquiry: 1) the construction of masculinities and male experiences, 2)
male feminism and men and feminism, 3) sexual minorities and gender
equity, and 4) men’s movement. While gender studies, and men’s studies
in particular, is defined by its positive or negative relationship to feminism,
this article will investigate only the pro-feminist areas of men’s studies.
After an introduction and explanation of relevant concepts, premises and
theories, this article will point to new directions in this field.
