本研究的目的在了解貧窮變遷和家庭結構的關係。首先我們比較民國七十年和七十九年臺灣省貧窮的變遷趨勢，按著，我們分析民國七十九年臺灣省貧窮的家庭結構。
本研究發現低收入戶戶長的婚姻地位除已婚者有下降外，其餘未婚、喪偶和離婚都有增加的趨勢。在男性戶長方面，已婚和喪偶減少，而離婚和未婚卻有增加的現象;至於女性方面則已婚有明顯下降，而喪偶卻增加很多，這種情形正好說明了女性單親家庭在貧窮的家庭結構佔有重要的地位。

Abstract ｜
The purpose of this study is to understand relations between poverty change and family structure. First, we compare poverty trends from 1981 to 1889 in Taiwan. Next, we explore relations between poverty and family structure in 1990.
This study reveals that the marital status of low-income household heads has changed between 1981 and 1990. The proportion married has decreased while the proportion who are divorced, unmarried or widowed has increased. For male household heads, the proportion married or widowed has decreased; divorced or unmarried have increased. For female household heads, the proportion married has decreased while the widowed have sharply increased. This study finds that female single-parent families account for much of the family structure effect on poverty.
